Backflow testing and repair in Ventura

Backflow testing is a yearly check that a backflow prevention assembly still stops used water from flowing back into the public drinking water supply. Ventura Water requires its customers' assemblies to be tested every year, and we test, repair and replace them.

Ventura Water's backflow requirements

Ventura Water runs a cross-connection control program that follows the State Water Resources Control Board's Cross-Connection Control Policy Handbook. According to the City of Ventura's Backflow and Cross-Connection page:

  • When: assemblies must be tested at installation, every year after that, after any repair, and after being moved.
  • Notices: customers receive an annual notice with their testing due date.
  • Tester certification: since July 1, 2025, every backflow tester in the City of Ventura must hold a valid certification from an ANSI-accredited organization, such as AWWA.
  • Reporting: since April 15, 2025, test results for Ventura Water customers must be uploaded to the BSI Online portal. Ventura County Environmental Health no longer handles notices or reports for the city.
  • Deadlines: late tests can bring late fees or disconnection of water service.

Assemblies we test

AssemblyWhere it's used
Reduced pressure principle (RP)High-hazard connections: commercial kitchens, medical offices, irrigation with chemical injection
Double check valve (DC)Low-hazard connections and many fire sprinkler services
Pressure vacuum breaker (PVB)Residential and commercial irrigation systems

How a backflow test works

  1. Notify the occupants. Water is shut off briefly during the test.
  2. Connect a calibrated test kit to the assembly's test cocks.
  3. Test each check valve and relief valve against the required pressure differentials.
  4. Restore service and confirm the assembly is back in normal operation.
  5. Upload the results to BSI Online and give you a copy for your records.

If an assembly fails

A failed test usually means a worn check valve, spring, seat or relief valve, often from debris or scale. Ventura's very hard water speeds up wear. We repair the assembly with manufacturer repair kits or replace it, then retest it, since the program requires a test after every repair.

How pricing works

Every job is different, so the cost depends on the type of work and what the job requires. We look at the problem first, explain your options, and confirm the price with you before any work starts.

Backflow testing questions

What happens if I miss my backflow test deadline?

Ventura Water can charge late fees or disconnect water service for overdue tests, according to the city. Book the test as soon as you receive your notice.

Do I need a backflow preventer on my home irrigation?

Irrigation systems are connected to drinking water, so the plumbing code requires backflow protection on them. Whether Ventura Water tracks and requires annual testing of your specific assembly is shown on your annual notice.

Who do I contact about my notice?

The city lists BSI Online's customer support at 888-966-6050 for Ventura Water backflow notices and account questions.
