A running toilet wastes more water than most homeowners expect. The U.S. EPA's WaterSense program estimates a leaking toilet can waste about 200 gallons a day.
Why toilet parts wear out faster in Ventura
Hard water and chloramine are both hard on toilet parts. Ventura's water averages 15 to 37 grains per gallon of hardness depending on the source, which leaves scale on fill valves and rim jets. Chloramine, the disinfectant Ventura Water uses, breaks down standard rubber flappers and seals faster than chlorine does. We install chloramine-resistant flappers and seals.
Toilet replacement and the Ventura Water rebate
Ventura Water offers a $100 rebate on a qualifying ultra-high-efficiency toilet that uses 1.1 gallons per flush or less, according to its rebates page. To apply, customers submit the application, original receipts, a copy of the water bill and a signed W-9.
When we replace a toilet, we:
- Help you choose a model, including 1.1 gpf toilets that qualify for the rebate.
- Remove and haul away the old toilet.
- Inspect the flange and repair it if it's cracked or corroded.
- Install with a new wax ring or wax-free seal, bolts and supply line.
- Give you an itemized receipt for your rebate application.
California's fixture law for older homes
California Civil Code section 1101.4 requires single-family homes built on or before January 1, 1994 to have water-conserving plumbing fixtures. It also makes compliant fixtures a condition of final approval when such a home is altered or improved under a building permit. Replacing older toilets that use more than 1.6 gallons per flush brings a home into line.
How pricing works
Every job is different, so the cost depends on the type of work and what the job requires. We look at the problem first, explain your options, and confirm the price with you before any work starts.

Toilet questions
Should I repair or replace my toilet?
It depends on the toilet. Repair a toilet that only needs a flapper, fill valve or wax ring. Replace one that's cracked, uses more than 1.6 gallons per flush, or clogs often after the drain is clear.
Will a 1.1 gallon toilet clog more?
No, not with current models. Modern high-efficiency toilets are designed and tested to clear waste at low volume, and many outperform older 1.6 gallon designs.
How do I check for a silent toilet leak?
Put a few drops of food coloring in the tank and wait 15 minutes without flushing. Color in the bowl means the flapper is leaking.
