Call (805) 429-3719What to do before we arrive
The first five minutes decide how much water damage a leak causes. Take these steps while you wait.
- Shut off the main water valve. Turn it clockwise until it stops. Most Ventura homes have a valve where the supply line enters the house and a second one at the meter box near the curb. See our guide to finding your main water shutoff.
- Turn off the water heater if hot water is leaking. Set a gas heater's control to "pilot," or switch off the breaker for an electric heater.
- Cut power to wet areas at the breaker panel if water is near outlets, appliances or light fixtures, and only if you can reach the panel without standing in water.
- Stop using drains if sewage is backing up. Every flush or shower adds more water to a blocked line.
- Take photos of the damage for your insurance claim before you clean up.
Leave the house first, then call SoCalGas at 1-800-427-2200 or 911 from outside. Do not use switches or phones inside. Once the gas company has made the area safe, we can repair or replace the gas line.
Plumbing emergencies we handle
- Burst or leaking pipes: water spraying under a sink, through a wall or from a ceiling.
- Sewage backups: waste water coming up in a tub, shower or floor drain, usually from a blocked or broken sewer lateral. See drain cleaning for main line clogs.
- Slab leaks: a hot spot on the floor, the sound of running water, or water seeping through flooring. See slab leak repair.
- Failed water heaters: a tank leaking from the bottom, or no hot water at all.
- No water to the house: after a main line break or a failed pressure regulator. See water line repair.
- Overflowing toilets that won't stop running or clear with a plunger.
- Frozen or damaged outdoor lines and broken hose bibs that flood a yard.
How emergency service works
- You call. A licensed plumber asks what you see and walks you through shutting off water if you haven't already.
- We dispatch. Because we work only inside Ventura, the plumber is already in town.
- We stop the damage. The first job is to stop water or sewage flow and make the home safe.
- You approve the repair. We explain the permanent fix and its price before starting it.
- We repair and document. You get photos and a written description of the work for your insurer.
How pricing works
Every job is different, so the cost depends on the type of work and what the job requires. We look at the problem first, explain your options, and confirm the price with you before any work starts.
Who to call: us or Ventura Water?
Ventura Water maintains the water main in the street and the meter. The pipe from the meter to the house is normally the owner's. The City of Ventura's private sewer lateral fact sheet makes the owner responsible for the sewer lateral from the house to the main in the street, up to and including the wye connection.

Emergency plumbing questions
Do you charge more at night or on weekends?
The cost depends on the type of work and what the job requires. We confirm the price with you before any work starts, whatever the hour.
Can you come on Christmas or Thanksgiving?
Yes. Steve's Plumbing Ventura answers and dispatches 365 days a year, including every holiday.
Will insurance cover my emergency plumbing repair?
It depends on your policy. Many homeowner policies cover sudden water damage but not the failed pipe itself. We provide photos and a written repair description so you can file a claim.
