Water softener installation for Ventura hard water
A water softener removes the calcium and magnesium that make water hard, which stops scale from building up in pipes, water heaters and fixtures. We install softeners, salt-free conditioners and whole-house filters sized to the hardness of your part of Ventura.
Call (805) 429-3719How hard is Ventura's water?
Ventura's water is very hard everywhere in the city, but the level depends on which source supplies your home. Ventura Water's 2024 Consumer Confidence Report lists these averages:
| Source | Hardness (ppm) | Hardness (grains per gallon) | Mainly serves |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lake Casitas | 263 | 15 | West and Midtown Ventura |
| Ventura River | 445 | 26 | West and Midtown Ventura |
| Groundwater basins | 637 (range 489 to 911) | 37 (range 29 to 53) | East and Midtown Ventura |
The Water Quality Association treats anything above 10.5 grains per gallon as very hard, so every Ventura source is well above that line. More detail is in our Ventura hard water guide.
Signs you need a water softener
- White crust on faucets, showerheads and glass shower doors.
- A water heater that pops or rumbles, or a tankless unit throwing scale errors.
- Spots on dishes and a film in the dishwasher.
- Soap and shampoo that won't lather well.
- Toilet flappers and fill valves that wear out every year or two.
Water treatment options we install
| System | What it does | Things to know |
|---|---|---|
| Salt-based softener | Ion exchange swaps hardness minerals for sodium or potassium | Truly softens water; regenerates with salt and discharges brine to the drain |
| Portable exchange-tank softener | Softener tanks swapped and regenerated off site by a service company | No brine discharge at the home; ongoing service fee |
| Salt-free conditioner (TAC) | Changes hardness minerals into crystals that don't stick as scale | No salt or brine; water isn't technically soft |
| Whole-house carbon filter | Removes chloramine and its taste and odor | Ventura Water uses chloramine; it needs catalytic carbon, not standard carbon |
| Reverse osmosis (under sink) | Filters drinking and cooking water | Sends a share of water to the drain as it filters |
Some California agencies restrict self-regenerating softeners that discharge brine to the sewer. We check the current City of Ventura and Ventura Water rules before every installation and recommend an exchange-tank or salt-free system wherever brine discharge is a concern.
How we size a softener for Ventura water
Softener size depends on your water's hardness and how much water your household uses. As an example, a household of 4 using about 75 gallons per person per day on 37 gpg groundwater needs about 11,100 grains of capacity per day (4 x 75 x 37). A unit that regenerates weekly would need about 78,000 grains of capacity. The same family on 15 gpg Casitas water would need well under half that.
We test your tap water on site before sizing, since your supply may be a blend.
What installation includes
- Test your water for hardness and chlorine or chloramine.
- Choose the location near the main line, usually in the garage or by the hose bib where the supply enters.
- Install a bypass valve so we can service the system without shutting off water to the house.
- Plumb the drain line with a code-required air gap.
- Keep an unsoftened line to outdoor hose bibs and irrigation, and to a kitchen drinking tap if you want one.
- Program and test the system, then show you how to maintain it.

Water softener questions
Is softened water safe to drink?
Yes, for most people. Salt-based softeners add a small amount of sodium. Anyone on a low-sodium diet can use potassium chloride or keep a separate unsoftened or reverse osmosis drinking tap.
Will a softener help my water heater last longer?
Yes. Removing hardness stops scale from forming on tank bottoms, heating elements and tankless heat exchangers, the main cause of early failure in Ventura's water.
Does Ventura's water have chlorine or chloramine?
Chloramine. Ventura Water's 2024 report shows a chloramine residual of 0.1 to 3.9 ppm in its distribution system, with a highest running annual average of 2.3 ppm, so filters for Ventura need catalytic carbon.
