Call (805) 429-3719Get everyone out of the house, then call SoCalGas at 1-800-427-2200 or 911 from outside. Do not turn lights or appliances on or off, and do not use a phone inside. Once SoCalGas has made the area safe, call us to repair the line.
Who owns the gas line?
SoCalGas, the gas utility in Ventura, owns the gas meter and the supply up to it. The piping from the outlet of the meter to your appliances is the property owner's, and it's that piping a licensed plumber repairs and installs.
Signs of a gas line problem
- A rotten-egg smell (the odorant added to natural gas) near an appliance, the meter or in the yard.
- A hissing sound near gas piping.
- Dead or yellowing grass along a buried gas line.
- A gas bill higher than usual with no new appliances.
- Appliance burners with weak, yellow or lifting flames.
Gas line services
- Leak detection and repair on indoor and buried gas piping.
- New gas lines for ranges, cooktops, dryers and outdoor kitchens.
- Gas lines for barbecues, fire pits, patio heaters and pool or spa heaters.
- Upsizing gas lines for a tankless water heater, which can need several times the gas flow of a tank.
- Flexible appliance connector and shutoff valve replacement.
- Gas line capping when switching an appliance to electric.
- Seismic gas shutoff valves, which close the gas supply automatically in a strong earthquake.
How we install or repair a gas line
- Calculate the load. We add up the BTU ratings of every appliance and size the pipe for the run length.
- Pull the City of Ventura permit. The city requires plumbing permits for gas line installation and replacement, and its permit application asks whether a water heater job extends the gas line.
- Install the piping in black steel, coated steel or CSST (corrugated stainless steel tubing), with CSST bonded as the manufacturer requires.
- Add shutoff valves and sediment traps at each appliance.
- Pressure-test the system and hold the test for the city inspector.
- Light and check each appliance for proper flame and draft.
How pricing works
Every job is different, so the cost depends on the type of work and what the job requires. We look at the problem first, explain your options, and confirm the price with you before any work starts.

Gas line questions
Do I need a permit to run a gas line to my BBQ in Ventura?
Yes. New gas piping needs a City of Ventura plumbing permit and a pressure test inspection, outdoors as well as indoors.
Can a gas leak be repaired, or does the pipe need replacing?
It depends on the leak. We replace the leaking fitting or connector. We usually replace corroded buried steel pipe with new pipe, since more leaks tend to follow.
Do you work on SoCalGas meters?
No. The meter and the supply to it belong to SoCalGas. We work on the house side of the meter and coordinate with SoCalGas when a meter needs upgrading or service needs restoring.
